All About Jeweltorious and Four Things I've Learned Since Starting A Business

This March, I started my accessories business, Jeweltorious (formerly known as Jeweltorious by L.A.C.). Yes, I became a business owner during quarantine and I believe this was the best time for me to take on this new venture. Initially, my business was operated under a direct sales company, which sold jewelry for only $5. However, in May, I decided to part ways with that company and go solo. Towards the end of June, I had a soft relaunch of Jeweltorious and I am very happy with how my business is being operated now. I

In this post, I will be sharing everything about Jeweltorious and what I have learned since starting my own business.

Before starting out with the direct sales company, I knew I always wanted to have my own business (my overall goal is to be a serial entrepreneur). Although I consider The Fashtorious L.A.C. as a business, I do not generate any money from it… yet 😏. So, for my first business, I knew I wanted to sell products that would be easy for me to buy from wholesale. I could have done a clothing e-commerce business, but I did not want to struggle with buying various sizes and excessive product expenses. Therefore, I decided to sell accessories.

Next, I needed a business name that would go along with the blog. One name that I was about to use was The Jewel Plug, but after seeing the Google search results… it was definitely a no (I dare you to Google it and see what you find 😂). Also, it seemed kind of too “gangsta-ish.” I am nowhere near being a gangsta. Finally, it just came to me… Jeweltorious.

I wanted the same color scheme (black, white, and gold) for my accessories business as it is for the blog. My target market are millennial women, but of course, anyone can wear pieces from Jeweltorious. I am still trying to cultivate/refine my brand. I consider Jeweltorious to be an aspirational luxury accessories brand for women.

Four Things I’ve Learned Since Starting A Business

  1. You Only Get The Results You Want By The Work You Put In

    You can’t just launch your website and expect for people to buy your items. You actually have to consistently present your business to everyone. I actually already knew this, but you really get to understand this when you have a business. I think some people get in over their heads when they want to be entrepreneurs because they automatically think that they will be making millions in a month, but it doesn’t work like that. You really need to put in the work.

  2. You Must Prioritize Your Self-Care

    I understand that you should really put in the work if you want your business to be successful, but I do not believe that that means that you have to sacrifice self-care. I think if anything, you should prioritize your self-care. In order for you to operate a successful business, you have to make sure that YOU are good first. This means that you should take time for yourself if you feel kind of burnt out or go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

    I used to believe that you should be up all night working on your dream, but honestly, that can backfire on you. For example, when Jeweltorious was under the direct sales company, I was constantly stressed out. I was trying to keep up with all of the team challenges and Facebook lives and sometimes I would stay up at night thinking about what I had to do for the next day. I was so stressed out that I ended up lashing at people I cared about… this was not good. So, I made it a priority to get an adequate amount of sleep.

  3. Do Not Fall For The Comparison Trap

    It is very easy to compare your business with another business that is similar to yours. You start looking at how many of their items are sold out and how people are reacting to their products on social media. However, you need to remember that 1) although you are selling similar products, your brand/business is different than theirs in some way and 2) if you are a new business, you need to realize that you are just starting out. The business that you are comparing yours to is probably at a different stage, which is totally fine. Also, the more that you are focused on other businesses, the more time that you are wasting. That time can be spent working on your business.

  4. There Is No Way Around Social Media

In business, social media needs to be your best friend. This is a little hard for me because I am not crazy about social media like I used to be when I was younger, but now that I have a business, I have to put my feelings aside and be active on social media. This means posting consistently and interacting with your customers/followers.
