Fashtoriously Two

by Lauren Corbett

Today marks the 2 year anniversary of this blog, The Fashtorious L.A.C. The beginning of this blog is so important to me because it is when I officially let go of my inhibitions.

Although my blog was launched in 2017, the ideation of it was in 2014. Between those three years, I was hesitant to show the world what I created. Also, I was a perfectionist (still am) who felt that maybe my blog wasn’t “professional” enough. All of these worries that I had about my blog went out the window when I was told that I wasn’t “on brand” by an editor of an online fashion publication for college students.

The publication was used to seeing young women with a cookie-cutter, Taylor Swift sense of style. What they weren’t used to seeing was a black woman (a curvy black woman) in a black one-piece swimsuit. I could have been that cookie-cutter girl that they were looking for, but honestly, my style is pretty versatile. One day, I could be wearing a pink dress because I feel cutesy. Next day, I could be athletic and wear a DKNY Sport outfit with sneakers. Another day, I might want to feel glamorous and sexy, so I would wear some type of fur with gold accessories and thigh high boots.

The editor’s comment lit a fire under me, which ultimately caused me to reveal my brand, style, and creativity to the world.

During these two years, I’ve gone through a lot. From college, graduation, heartbreak, rejection, promotion, and etc. Also, I’ve grown immensely. I’ve found my voice and purpose. I am happy that I am on track to becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be.

I want to thank those who keep coming to my blog to see/read my latest entries and those who support me on social media and in real life.

I want to give a special thank you to my mother who is my inspiration and photographer for all of my blog pictures. I love you Mommy! :)

Fashtoriously,

Lauren Ashley Corbett

DKNY Sport

by Lauren Corbett

I’m baaaaaccckk! It feels good to be back doing what I love! The last time I published a blog post was on New Year’s Eve and I was talking about my business resolutions for 2019. Let’s just say I didn’t keep those resolutions. Haha. I hope to tell you why I took an 8-month break soon, but I will say that no one and nothing can take away from the purpose that God has for your life! When He speaks to you…listen (we will talk about this later).

Now, let’s discuss this outfit! Yes, I know it’s still summer and it’s blazin’ outside, but I had to take pictures in this tough fit! I found this DKNY Sport Logo Print Jacket and Reflective Logo Tank Top at Macy’s in July. Macy’s was having their Black Friday in July sale. Usually, I don’t shop at Macy’s, but I had a $25 gift card that I never used, so I decided to buy this cute active ensemble. I do not remember the original price of the garments, but I do know that my total came up to $60. In my opinion, that wasn’t too bad for a DKNY outfit. The jacket is great for when it is raining and it can be used as a windbreaker.

My black and white exposed seam leggings (similar) come from a little teeny bopper store at my local mall. These are perfect for those who are exercise regularly because they are breathable, stretchy, and comfortable. There are slit two pockets on each side as well. These pockets can be used for holding your phone or keys.

My 2016 Balenciaga Speed Trainer sneakers were actually my mother’s, but she gave them to me because they were too big for her. Let me tell you, these sneakers are so comfortable! There is another version of the Speed Trainer sneaker, which has a black and white sole.

Do you like this outfit? Leave a comment. Also, I am trying to experiment with my writing style for the blog. Do you appreciate my outfit described posts or encouraging posts? Let me know :)

Fur Season

by Lauren Corbett

UPDATE (11/24/18) ***After watching “The True Cost” documentary for my Fashion Promotion class project, I have decided to be more mindful of the garments that I choose to purchase and wear. There have been staggering statistics of lives lost, labor law abuses in South Asian countries — whereby workers are forced to work under unbelievable, inhumane conditions. So, for those reasons, I will think twice about how often I shop, where I shop, and the fabrics and materials I choose to wear.***

It is officially FUR SEASON! I LOVE FUR! I understand that this might be a problem because sustainability is important in the fashion industry right now. Fashion brands are switching from genuine fur to faux fur. I believe the forerunner of the sustainability movement in the industry is Stella McCartney, who is Paul McCartney’s daughter.

While sustainability is very important, I will say that the fur that you see in these pictures are real. I think my love for fur comes from my culture — the black culture. In the black culture, fur coats (or anything fur for that matter) are symbols of wealth and status. You particularly see fur worn from those in the hip hop community. Before the growth of hip hop, you would see some African Americans wearing fur during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s as well. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of intellectual, artistic, and social explosion among African Americans in the New York borough of Harlem. During this time, African Americans migrated from the rural south to the north (known as The Great Migration) to have more economic opportunities and cultural capital. A lot of prominent black figures such as Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, and Nora Zeale Hurston come from this era. This was the golden age for black people.

What are your thoughts about fur?

Keep Going

by Lauren Corbett

I wanted this to be a part of my newsletter, but I think it is better to write it as a blog post because it can help anyone who is going through a tough time right now.

As you all know, I took a break from The Fashtorious L.A.C. During this time, I went through a breakup, death of a family member, and other things. All these events brought up feelings of sadness, anger, and confusion. Around that time, I felt that it was not right to post blog entries knowing that I was in such a trying time. But… I was wrong. We (creatives) create our best pieces of work when we are in emotional pain. Also, it’s therapeutic for our soul and we unknowingly help others with whatever we create. Trust me, it is very easy to get so caught up in our own emotions that we want to isolate ourselves and dwell on the negative, but we cannot do that. That is the devil’s way of stunting our growth. We must keep going and fulfill God’s purpose for our life.

While I understand that this is a fashion blog and the majority of my posts should be about clothing, I get more joy out of writing blog entries like this one. Therefore, I know that God’s purpose for my life is to encourage and empower others.

So… KEEP GOING despite rejection.

KEEP GOING despite your past.

KEEP GOING despite your present.

KEEP GOING despite self doubt.

KEEP GOING despite fear.

KEEP GOING despite your insecurities.

KEEP GOING despite judgement from others.

KEEP GOING despite heartbreak

No matter what you’re going through right now, just keep going because eventually, everything will turn out the way that God meant for it to be.
