Remember Who You Are

by Lauren Corbett

This is just a reminder to remember who the hell you are. I feel that it is very important, especially for women, to remember their self-worth. Never let anyone, especially a wack dude, disrespect you in any way. That person may have a lot of good qualities, but if they continue to say or do something that bothers you (and they are aware of this) then they have no respect for you whatsoever. Stop wasting your time and breath on this person.

Also, don’t waste time on a dude who puts in little to no effort. You deserve WAY more than what he is offering you. If a guy is not going hard for you during the courting phase, then he ain’t the one for you. I’ve noticed that my generation of men (or guys I should say) expect the women to chase after them. I will not/will not chase after no dude. It’s one thing for a man to be nervous or shy around a woman. I’m not talking about those men. I’m talking about the guys who expect you to put yourself on a silver platter in the very beginning. Those who expect you to go hard for them when they haven’t done (S)ugar (H)oney (I)ce (T)ea for you. Beware of those! Do not drop your standards and do not give in to them. If they really want to be with you, then they will try to meet you where you are and understand the importance of wooing you. Understand that YOU are the prize, not him. He should be jumping through hoops to be with you, not the other way around.

So, until a man meets my standards … it’s a big, THANK U, NEXT! (Ariana Grande voice)

In terms of others, those who try to belittle you, understand that there is something wrong with them internally. They are not happy with themselves. Anyone who tries to bring you down and dim your light has a lot of insecurities that need to be dealt with. Understand that this is not your problem, so do not make it your problem.

Continue to love yourself, live your life, and secure your bag $$$

Fur Season

by Lauren Corbett

UPDATE (11/24/18) ***After watching “The True Cost” documentary for my Fashion Promotion class project, I have decided to be more mindful of the garments that I choose to purchase and wear. There have been staggering statistics of lives lost, labor law abuses in South Asian countries — whereby workers are forced to work under unbelievable, inhumane conditions. So, for those reasons, I will think twice about how often I shop, where I shop, and the fabrics and materials I choose to wear.***

It is officially FUR SEASON! I LOVE FUR! I understand that this might be a problem because sustainability is important in the fashion industry right now. Fashion brands are switching from genuine fur to faux fur. I believe the forerunner of the sustainability movement in the industry is Stella McCartney, who is Paul McCartney’s daughter.

While sustainability is very important, I will say that the fur that you see in these pictures are real. I think my love for fur comes from my culture — the black culture. In the black culture, fur coats (or anything fur for that matter) are symbols of wealth and status. You particularly see fur worn from those in the hip hop community. Before the growth of hip hop, you would see some African Americans wearing fur during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s as well. The Harlem Renaissance was a period of intellectual, artistic, and social explosion among African Americans in the New York borough of Harlem. During this time, African Americans migrated from the rural south to the north (known as The Great Migration) to have more economic opportunities and cultural capital. A lot of prominent black figures such as Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, and Nora Zeale Hurston come from this era. This was the golden age for black people.

What are your thoughts about fur?
