Fashtoriously Two

by Lauren Corbett

Today marks the 2 year anniversary of this blog, The Fashtorious L.A.C. The beginning of this blog is so important to me because it is when I officially let go of my inhibitions.

Although my blog was launched in 2017, the ideation of it was in 2014. Between those three years, I was hesitant to show the world what I created. Also, I was a perfectionist (still am) who felt that maybe my blog wasn’t “professional” enough. All of these worries that I had about my blog went out the window when I was told that I wasn’t “on brand” by an editor of an online fashion publication for college students.

The publication was used to seeing young women with a cookie-cutter, Taylor Swift sense of style. What they weren’t used to seeing was a black woman (a curvy black woman) in a black one-piece swimsuit. I could have been that cookie-cutter girl that they were looking for, but honestly, my style is pretty versatile. One day, I could be wearing a pink dress because I feel cutesy. Next day, I could be athletic and wear a DKNY Sport outfit with sneakers. Another day, I might want to feel glamorous and sexy, so I would wear some type of fur with gold accessories and thigh high boots.

The editor’s comment lit a fire under me, which ultimately caused me to reveal my brand, style, and creativity to the world.

During these two years, I’ve gone through a lot. From college, graduation, heartbreak, rejection, promotion, and etc. Also, I’ve grown immensely. I’ve found my voice and purpose. I am happy that I am on track to becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be.

I want to thank those who keep coming to my blog to see/read my latest entries and those who support me on social media and in real life.

I want to give a special thank you to my mother who is my inspiration and photographer for all of my blog pictures. I love you Mommy! :)

Fashtoriously,

Lauren Ashley Corbett

Business Resolutions for 2019

by Lauren Corbett

Tomorrow is officially the start of 2019! 2018 was filled with personal and professional growth for me. There are personal New Year’s resolutions that I have ALREADY started before the new year, but I do not want to talk about that today. I want to talk the business resolutions that I have in place for 2019. These are particularly related to my brand, The Fashtorious L.A.C.

  1. CONSISTENCY: In 2019, I would like to be more consistent with my blog. In 2018, I took a seven month break from my blog as you all know, but I do not want to do that again. I feel that if I want to be successful with my brand, I have to continue to create, promote, and evolve! Therefore, this year I will focus a lot on being consistent. I want to have a new blog post at least once a week.

  2. BRANDING: More like personal branding. I love my blog name, color scheme, and etc. However, I want to stand out more, especially on social media. In order to build a stronger personal brand, I believe I need to allow myself to be more open, especially on social media. Share more of my day-to-day life. Let people see more of my personality.

  3. SOCIAL MEDIA: I really want to work on gaining more of a following on social media, particularly Instagram. Right now, I have about 304 followers and it fluctuates every day. I believe this is due to me not being consistent on that platform. Also, I do not just want more followers, but more engagement. I need to be more consistent on Instagram and ask my current followers what type of content they want me to provide for them. Social media can be really annoying to me, but in order to have a strong brand, I have to utilize it.

  4. COLLABORATIONS/SPONSORSHIPS/NEW ENTERPRISES: In 2019, I really want to start collaborating with other bloggers, stylists, and etc. Collaborations are key to gaining more exposure, networking with peers in the industry, and ultimately being successful. I have an idea on how I can start collaborating with others, but that is my little secret ;)

I would LOVE to gain a brand sponsorship. In 2018, a representative from a hotel aggregator contacted me because they wanted me to partner with them. I did not go through with this partnership due to unfamiliarity of the brand and lack of compensation. A brand that I would love to partner with is Marriott. I love staying at their nice hotels and I am a part of the Marriott Rewards program. I believe that I would be a good fit for the brand.

In addition to fashion, I am also into business! My mind is always thinking about new business ideas and this year, I want to launch them. I actually have one in the works right now ;)

What are your resolutions for 2019?

Overachiever.

by Lauren Corbett

These pictures are more recent. Taken in late summer/early fall.

Overachiever. As most of you know, I attend Virginia Commonwealth University and major in Fashion Merchandising. What you may not know is that I am an overachiever. I have always had a strong work ethic, which has resulted in good grades and a slew of awards (not saying that in a boastful way). While I believe my desire to succeed and do well in school is great, I realized that my well-being comes first and foremost.

Last semester was rough, which is why I did not post as much as I wanted. I was dealing with teleworking full-time, attending classes where I was required to be a part of semester-long group projects, increase in rent, struggling financially, and etc. It was definitely stressful and I finally realized right after the semester that I took on too much. Every other day, I was probably crying or snappy. I finished strong though -- All A's and one B.

I am happy to say that this semester, I have a lighter workload and am more focused on my well-being. The reason why I wanted to write this post was to tell anyone reading it, please do not take on more than you can handle. Your health (physical and mental) come before anything else.

Liberated.

by Lauren Corbett

Liberated. That's how I'm feeling mainly because this is my first blog post. I have been working on and overthinking about the execution and brand of this blog for more than two years. I am a perfectionist, so I was not going to launch this website until I thought it was perfect. However, I realized that the more time I spent making everything perfect, the more I would delay the launch. Also, I started analyzing every detail of the blog that I wasn't having fun anymore. I was worried about how my family, friends, professors, boyfriend's family, etc. would think about my outfits and information presented on the blog that it resulted in me almost not having a blog. Can you imagine if The Fashtorious L.A.C. did not exist?! That would be horrible. I am glad that I finally let go of my perfectionism and realized that I cannot please everyone. There will be some things on my website that people will disagree with or not like, but I cannot worry about that because I am being myself authentically and unapologetically -- I am Lauren Ashley Corbett aka The Fashtorious L.A.C.
